Honors of war are a set of privileges that are granted to a defeated enemy. The honours symbolize the valor of the defeated enemy, and grew into a custom during the age of early warfare on Terra. The term has evolved many times in the centuries since its appearance on the stage of war. The term is most used by MechWarriors that wish to preserve the loss of their BattleMech, some of which are family heirlooms, from destruction. The victor will usually allow the MechWarrior, or the MechWarrior's unit, a chance to ransom the BattleMech back. The price of the ransom varies widely but can be anywhere from ten to twenty percent of the value of the 'Mech. The pilot is also ransomed, though the cost for his ransom is usaully several months salary. In rare cases, Full Honors of War is bestowed upon a defeated foe. Full Honors allows the defeated to take their equipment and their dead and injured from the field with no further hostilies. This is usually something that is reserved for the most honorable of foes. Conversely, Denial of Honors happens when the defeated consists of hated foes or unscrupulous foes and sees the defeated taken prisoner and their 'Mechs taken as salvage by the victors. Those so unlucky enter the ranks of the Dispossessed; a cruel fate in the thirty-first century.
