Physical Description

Shadow elves are short and slim, standing about 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet tall and typically weighing 95 to 135 pounds, with males the same height as and only marginally heavier than females. They are graceful but frail. Shadow elves are known for their pale skin and light hair. Their ears are large than other elves, it is a giveaway in the company of others of their type. Shadow Elves have not facial or body hair. They prefer simple, confortable clothes, especially in deep purples and they enjoy complex and intricrate jewelry.

Shadow elves are a xenophobic race that only recently has begun to have contact with the surface world. They have a deep racial enimty with surface elves, a trait that reciprocated, as well as the humanoids that have raided their homes for generations. They are antagonistic to dwarves and due to the many years of conflict and but are neutral in their dealings with halflings and humans. They mistrust half-elves and half-orcs in general and the feeling is mutual.

Shadow Elf society is built on laws so they are normally lawful and they tend to be neutral more often than good or evil. Adventuring Shadow Elves are less likely to fit the common mold, however, since they're more likely to be those who didn't fit perfectly into Shadow Elf society.

Shadow Elf Lands

The Shadow Elves dwell mostly in the Shadowlands; a region of vast underground caverns and a sprawling network of tunnels that stretch across the Known World; albeit under the surface. They have recently invaded the surface world, conquering the Elf nation of the Kingdom of Alfheim, renaming it Aengmor in memory of a great city lost to calamity centuries ago.

The Shadow elves worship Rafiel to almost the exclusion of all other Immortals. In fact his Verses of the Refuge of Stone dominate their daily life. The worship of Rafiel is not a simple business. It contains puzzles, paradoxes, and symbolic truths; a sense of wonder and strangeness in the service of Rafiel.

When a shadow elf speaks, they are quite eloquent and their speech is musical, as is common among elves. Barring the poorest among them, shadow elves are generally literate. Most shadow elves only know two languages: Schattenalfen (Shadow Elf), Oenkmarian (Undercommon) because they usually stayed in their cities and therefore exposure to other languages and the need to learn them was limited. However, shadow elf adventurers, outcasts, and traders learn more languages, as does their warriors.
