Wizard Warrens

Wizard Warrens

The Wizard Warrens is the name given to the vast labyrinth of of chambers and corridors that exist beneath the streets and canals of Glantri City. These warrens have an untold number of entrances, most of the warded or guarded as they are still being used by the various wizards and arcane cabals of the city. Many more entrances are lost to time, forgotten walled off sections of a building's basement or a long abandoned tunnel of the sewers that lead into the depths. These warrens spread out under the entire walled section of the city and into the suburbs beyond. Their depth is unknown but it is rumored to go so deep as to have connections to the far and distance Shadowlands. Many adventurers, mostly wizards seeking lore and their companions that travel with them, plumb the depths of the Wizard Warrens. Many don't return.

Notable Locales

  • The Warren of Darkness: An area beneath the Great School of Magic that is engulfed by a magical darkness that defies explanation. It is also the location of a powerful magical obelisk that refreshes previously cast spells.
  • The Forgotten Forge:  An area beneath the West Side Quarter that once was a House Moriamis forge and home to the Arcanist
  • The Transmuter's Last Touch: An area beneath the West Side Quarter that was once a temple dedicated to Marwdyn but was repurposed by a wizard some decades ago. His experiments left the region awash in random magical nodes. The Transmuter abandoned this laboratory which was, until recently, claimed by a kobold tribe led by Tazex the Everchanging.
  • The Goblin Bazaar: The Rustbone Tribe of Goblins have claimed an old throne room and turned it into a bazaar. Admission into the goblin bazaar is free, but non-goblins are watched carefully. The bazaar attracts many surface dwellers looking to sell items to buyers that don't question its providence.
  • Aszok's Hold:The subterranean town of Stromkuhldur lies divided in chucks by ancient cave-ins that drove away its original inhabitants. Since then, many factions have fought over this outpost. Currently the Shadow Elves of House Auvryndar and the goblinoids of the Legion of Aszok are teetering on the brink of war over this strategically important area.
  • The Twisted Caverns: Natural caverns abundant with flora and bisected by the Sargauth River. Here an Aboleth attempted to enslave the denizens, a tribe of Tortles by subjugating their leader Ploqwat. A House Auvryndar expedition led by Melith Auvryndar contests for control of this level.
  • Wyllowwood: This underground forest is home to Wyllow, a tyrannical archdruid and a Green Dragon with a splitting headache that keep anyone that pass through their realm on their toes.
  • The Lost Level: The seat of King Melair and his Clan which was sealed off and lost to the ages until umber hulks burrowed a path and unsealed the final resting place of the great dwarf king. His descendant leads a ragtag band of raiders to claim the Heart of the Warrens and claim her birthright; only some dark stalks the halls.
  • Maddgoth's Castle: An amnesiac family of Stone Giants and a prankster Faerie Dragon make their home in a cavern with a miniature, one-twelfthscale fortress; the home base of Maddgoth, a serial killer who lures other wizards to his lair to murder them and keep their arcane focuses and spellbooks as trophies.
  • The Slitherswamp: Nagas and Bullywugs wrestle for control of the humid and damp cavern that was once the swampy home to a tribe of Yuan-ti. The fetid swamp holds many tramatic memories that haunt the steps of any brave enough to get between these warring factions.
  • Dweomercore: The dark school of magecraft that offers the greatest of prizes; apprenticeship to the greatest practitioner of the arcane arts. The arcanist is rumored to host talented mages whom might prove themselves worthy of his tutelage but as many come to realize,  the Dweomercore is an academy of magic designed to test, trap and confound its students.
  • Muiral's Gauntlet: Muiral the Misshapen, one of the arcanist’s apprentices, claimed this shadow elf built level as his private hunting grounds after the elves were forced to abandon it long ago. Areas of the dungeon under Muiral's control are pale shadows of their former glory, having fallen into disrepair and neglect. Under the leadership of a Matriarch named Vlonwelv Auvryndar, the elves have recently returned to reclaim the level. House Auvryndar and its allies hope to establish a permanent stronghold here to continue their war against House Freth. The shadow elf forces on this level are bolstered by a gang of troglodytes under the command of a loathsome leader named Gorzil.
  • The Troglodyte Warrens: Troglodytes inhabit this level of the Wizard Warrens. Their dominance is contested by shadow elf factions determined to enslave them, trolls twisted by the Arcanist’s magic and hungry for troglodyte flesh, and a magically enhanced behir intent on terrorizing all.
